Alex Black

Alex Black is the CEO of ADInstruments, a Dunedin-based technology company that's focused on helping make science easier for medical researchers and educators. ADInstruments develops hardware and software to help medical researchers record and analyse biological signals, and educators teach medicine through hands-on experimentation.

ADInstruments was founded nearly 40 years ago when its founder, Michael Macknight, built an analogue-to-digital converter to help his father teach medicine at the University of Otago. Today, the company supports more than 10,000 universities, research institutes and pharmaceutical companies, including all of the world’s top 100 universities.

With 99% of its revenue generated outside New Zealand, ADInstruments is a truly global business, employing 200 people across eight countries.With a background in software development and marketing, Alex joined ADInstruments in 2014, initially as Head of Marketing, and became CEO in 2020. At MORGO, he will share how ADInstruments grew from solving a problem in a Dunedin garage into a global science and technology company—and how it continues to innovate and evolve four decades later
